I have a 1996 Ford Explorer.   Recently the OD off lifght came on and will not go off when I push the switch.   Furthermore, while I am driving, the vehicle will automatically downshift to third gear and will not go back into overdrive.   Transmission fluid is good. Is it time for a new transmission (or car)? Thanks a lot.

Optional Information:
1996 Ford Explorer V-6

ACCEPTED Check Mark

The overdrive light on is indicating an electronic component fault inside the transmission, there will be a code set in the processor, need to have the code retrieved to trouble shoot the problem, the transmission could have major problems but until there is a diagnosis, it could be as easy as a shift solenoid, or as major as a trans overhaul or replacement. hope this helps.
