I have a 2004 Mazda MPV, 5 speed auto trans. Last December I traveled to Oralndo. On the way to Disney, vehicle runs around 50 mph, when I pushed gas pedal, vehicle run unsmoothly, then check engine light is on. I went to a Ford dealar nearby. They told me that it was #6 coil failure and spent near $500 fixed it (I still doubt it is the real problem). When on the way home (Michigan) from Florida on a rainy night, the problem occurs again, I just drove the vehicle 200 more miles from repair. Then I thought it was trans problem and change trans oil. It looks good and all the way I drove it back to Michigan. Last night, it was a rainy night too, I took my wife to a local area for Mother''s day party, the same problem appears again, first vehicle has difficult to change gear around 50 mph, then check engine light is flash, when we stopped on the shoulder, the engine runs unsmoothly.

No, I did not check the code. But the Ford dealer said they have check it. And they said the code indicated that the #6 coil failure. It is so unblievable that the dealer did not replaced #6 coil instead they replaced #2 or #3, the one the easiest to replace. They also reprogramed. So that is why the problem reappears when I only drove about 200 miles.

You need to have the codes pulled 1st. As far as the easiest coil/plug replacement, #s 1-3 are the most difficult and require the upper intake manifold to be removed. #s 4-6 are right in front and are very simple to replace.Did they replace the spark plug at the same time?It may be the plug thats at fault not the coil. One other thing-depending on the mileage-sometimes all thats needed is the coil BOOT not the whole coil assembly. The boot is a fraction of the cost of a new coil. Eventually the rubber boots dry out and lose their insulating capability, resulting in the coil firing thru them onto the cylinder head and not on to the spark plug .This causes the missfire and check engine light. If you drive it too long missfiring it will flood the catalyist( inside the) the cat. converter with fuel and ruin it-very expensive! Take it to a Dealer (Mazda or Ford). Here in the North East Ive heard the Ford dealers are less expensive than Mazda. If its a missfire code have them replace the faulty coil (if needed) all the plugs and all the boots.Worn out boots should have a burn mark where the coil electricity has been shooting thru them. Good luck and please let me know how it turns out or if you need any further assistance!

It makes sense. However, all these happened in rainy day and it works fine now after I initiate the program by unpluging the battery caple.

It is wired.

One more quick question. You said #s 4-6 are right front. Then which one is #6?
